Imagine, just for a second, that the people running this country actually cared. Not “cared” as in Twitter posts. Not “cared” as in photo ops outside half-burned council houses. But cared enough to invest even 10%, hell, even 5%, of their bloated salaries, shady backhanders, and golden pensions into actual housing.
Imagine if fixing roofs mattered more to them than buying new ones for their fifth property. Wild thought, right? Welcome to Britain.
Where Does All the Money Go? (Spoiler: Not to You)
Every year, billions pour into government hands from taxpayers.
Every year, the housing crisis gets worse. Somehow, there’s always money for MP pay rises, pointless “housing task forces,” endless “strategy meetings” that end with absolutely nothing being built. But when it comes to fixing damp, building social housing, or stopping mass homelessness?
Suddenly, the wallet’s empty.
Suddenly, it’s “complicated.”
Meanwhile, politicians quietly grow property portfolios faster than the mould on a council flat wall.
The Great Broken Promise Marathon
Every election, it’s the same song:
“We will fix the housing crisis!”
“We will build a better Britain!”
“Homes for all!”
And every year after that, reality looks like: Higher rents, More evictions, Less legal protection for tenants, More luxury flats nobody can afford, More homeless people freezing under motorway bridges. It’s not incompetence anymore. It’s design.
Imagine a Different Reality… Just for a Laugh
What if politicians:
Were legally forced to live in the worst properties listed by their own housing inspectors? Had to survive 6 months on Universal Credit before being allowed to vote on benefit reforms? Had their second homes repossessed every time a council tenant was illegally evicted?
Imagine the miracles:
Housing laws passed overnight,
Repairs done in 24 hours,
Landlords crying in courtrooms,
Actual affordable homes being built for once.
Maybe if they personally inhaled black mould for a few nights, they’d finally understand the word “urgent.”
But No. Here We Are.
While you fight for heating. While you beg letting agents to answer emails.
While you work two jobs to pay rent and council tax and food bills and bus fares, They’re toasting themselves with taxpayer-funded champagne. The system isn’t broken. It’s working exactly the way it was designed: for them.
The Real Question Isn’t “What If” It’s “When Will We Stop Letting Them?”
Every vote.
Every protest.
Every tenant group formed.
Every blog post written.
Every shout online.
It matters.
They want you quiet.
They want you exhausted.
They want you thinking “what’s the point?”
Because the second you realise you outnumber them,
it’s game over.
They won’t fix this.
They won’t save you.
You will.
